Each entry has been expanded to provide more details about each economist. The 1,000 living economists were selected on the basis of the frequency with which their works are cited in the Social Sciences Citation Index. Choices among the deceased economists were guided by the study of names recorded in the indexes of major works on the history of economic thought. Entries typically include full name, date, and place of birth, current position, recent previous positions, degrees, professional memberships and awards, major fields of interest, a 300-word statement of principal contributions, and chief publications. The authors of the entries are the economists themselves. The entries on deceased economists have been prepared by the editor.
