Her body covered from head to toe, hidden in wide crinoline skirts, distorted with pinched waists & huge bustles, the Victorian lady's true figure was somewhat of a mystery. Without a bonnet or hat, a Victorian lady's costume was incomplete. Hats were available in infinite variety from the practical sunbonnet worn by pioneer women to the ridiculous 'ugly,' a visor-like attachment to a lady's bonnet worn at the beach. Trimmings were just as important as the hat itself, & decorations ranged from the common, such as lace or ribbon, to the bizarre-- whole stuffed birds or bird wings.
