The health status of individuals (especially the poor) in developing countries is particularly important, from an economic perspective, because of the accentuated impact ill health has on productivity, human capital efficiency and subsequent levels of well being in these countries. This series aims to provide greater understanding of the relationship between poverty, health and health care demand. In order to achieve this, there is a need to firstly examine the mechanisms through which the poor are made more vulnerable through sickness and subsequently stay in or move into poverty. The series then extends this understanding by providing a quantitative approach in establishing how poverty can influence health care demand and health care insurance. Overall, this collection enables us to bring together a number of health based quantitative papers for developing countries to take stock of what we know about the role poverty and low income plays in the health status and health demand of individuals and households. This book was previously published as a special issue of the Journal of Development Studies.Hulme, David is the author of 'Understanding Peace and Security', published 2006 under ISBN 9780415376716 and ISBN 0415376718.
