Peter O. Steiner served for twenty-three years at the University of Michigan as professor of economics and professor of law. For eight years he was also the dean of the College of Literature, Science and the Arts. After receiving a Ph.D. from Harvard in 1950, he taught economics and statistics at the University of California at Berkeley and at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, before moving to Ann Arbor. He is the co-author of the textbook Economics, which has sold nearly two million copies. Steiner retired from teaching in 1991, but his serious poker playing began during World War II aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Independence and has been a profitable hobby ever since.
