Jim Heid has been working with and writing about personal computers since 1980, when he computerized his home-built ham radio station with a Radio Shack TRS-80 Model I. As Senior Technical Editor of one of the first computer magazines, Kilobaud Microcomputing, he began working with Macintosh prototypes in 1983. He began writing for Macworld magazine in 1984, and has been a Contributing Editor ever since. He currently writes its monthly "Digital Hub" column, which covers iLife and related topics. He has also written for PC World, Internet World, and Newsweek magazines, and until recently wrote a weekly, nationally syndicated Macintosh column for the Los Angeles Times. Jim frequently teachers courses in digital video, DVD authoring, and related topics. He has taught at the Kodak Center for Creative Imaging in Camden, Maine, at the University of Hawaii, and at dozens of technology conferences in between. He's also the host and editorial director of iDay, a series of one-day seminars covering iLife and digital-media topics (www.avondalemedia.com). Jim's interest in music, photography, and movie-making preceded his passion for personal computers. He began playing piano at age 6 and got his first reel-to-reel tape recorder-a hand-me-down from his father's recording studio-when he was 10. He began taking pictures at age 12, and set up a basement darkroom and began making home movies at 14. To satisfy his craving for the latest digital cameras, Jim is a frequent seller on eBay. His interest in eBay led to a book, Sell it On eBay: TechTV's Guide to Successful Online Auctions, which he coauthored with his friend and business partner, Toby Malina. In 2002, Jim, Toby, and long-time colleague Steve Broback co-founded Avondale Media, a video- and event-production company that produces instructional DVDs, seminars, and other training resources. As editorial director, he oversees the editorial development and production of DVDs and events. Jim lives with his wife and colleague, Maryellen Kelly, and their standard poodle and mascot, Sophie, on a windswept headland near Mendocino, California. On most Wednesday evenings, he co-hosts "Point and Click Radio," a weekly computer radio show, which you can listen to at www.kzyx.org/pc.Jim Heid is the author of 'The Macintosh iLife 04: An Interactive Guide to iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, and GarageBand', published 2004 under ISBN 9780321246714 and ISBN 0321246713.
