SUMMARY

Typically, the uncertainties play a dominant role during the design and optimization procedure of structures and products. In optimum design of structural systems due to variations of the material, manufacturing variations, variations of the external loads and modelling uncertainty, the parameters of a structure, a structural system and its environment are not given, fixed coefficients, but random variables with a certain probability distribution. The increasing necessity to solve complex problems in Probabilistic Mechanics requires the development of new ideas, innovative methods and numerical tools for providing accurate numerical solutions in affordable computing times. The purpose of this book is to present the latest research findings in the scientific field of Structural Optimization considering Uncertainties. The selected contributions of this book deal with the use of probabilistic methods for the optimal design of different types of structures and various considerations of uncertainties. This new (both in content and in structure) volume is a "multi-collective" book of twenty-one, high-quality and self-contained chapters, which present state-of-the-art theoretical advances and applications in various field of probabilistic computational mechanics. This edited book consists of selected contributions of the most pronounced authors in the aforementioned field, whereas most available books in the area are monographs which are not too up-to-date and also they are not so multi-collective . From: Preface In engineering problems, the randomness and uncertainties are inherent and the scatter of structural parameters from their nominal ideal values is unavoidable. In design and optimization of structural systems due to variations of the material, manufacturing variations, variations of the external loads and modelling uncertainty, the parameters of a structure, a structural system and its environment are not given, fixed coefficients, but random variables with a certain probability distribution. In most cases, the uncertainties play a dominant role during the design and optimization procedure. In recent years, probabilistic based formulations of optimization problems have been developed to account for uncertainty and randomness through stochastic simulation and probabilistic analysis. Stochastic analysis methods have been developed over the last two decades and have stimulated the interest for tTsompanakis is the author of 'Structural Design Optimization Considering Uncertainties', published 2008 under ISBN 9780415452601 and ISBN 0415452600.
