He reported the gold rush from the Coolgardie mines and was a respected journalist in Perth before becoming Premier of Western Australia. Throughout his life Colebatch survived an assassination attempt, was a federal senator, became Agent-General in London and met some of the twentieth century's most famous international figures including Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler, Herbert Hoover, Mussolini and Helen Keller.
