In Sep. 1857, the SS Central America, a side-wheeler carrying 600 passengers returning from the California Gold Rush, foundered in a hurricane & sank. Over 400 lives & 21 tons of California gold were lost. It was the worst peacetime disaster at sea in American history. In the 1980s, a young engineer set out to do what no one had been able to do: establish a working presence on the deep-ocean floor. In Oct. 1989 he found the Central America in 8,000 feet of water, & including the recovered treasure: gold coins, bars, nuggets, & dust, plus trunks filled with clothes, newspapers, books & journals. This is the story of the search for the ship & the efforts to establish a working presence in the deep ocean.Kinder, Gary is the author of 'Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea', published 2002 under ISBN 9780756718749 and ISBN 0756718740.
