SUMMARY

(Comedy) 80-90 min. You'd have to be crazy to want into the asylum, but even crazier to want out! Seeking Asylum is guaranteed to drive your audience crazy (or insane?) with laughter, with a madcap and almost farcical comedy about folks making their way through life in an asylum ? or trying to get back there. Here's a world where one set of delusions are cured by another, where real life and infomercial join together for a skewed sense of reality (and product endorsement), where a character's crazy ramblings make more sense than the folks who live in the ?sane? universe. This is the play that explores such complex issues as: Why does everybody look like rapper LL Cool J? Is it really a crime to vote Democratic in Texas? Is your life really nothing but an infomercial? When are your parents not your parents? There's the doctor, who presides over the ward, but seems to have an agenda far beyond seeing anyone get well. Why cure them, when you can exploit them to sell your medical products on a cable TV infomercial? There's Mark, whose mental condition has lead to the creation of two annoying ? but hilarious ? imaginary friends. Are they really running around with their in-your-face hip hop humor, or is Mark just acting them out? Mark doesn't want to get well, not if it means losing his ?girls? Phyllis and Shamikya. Then there's Renee, Mark's wife. The sane one. Oh, really? She's jealous! She's tired of seeing her husband get all the attention because he's got problems. In every play she's ever seen, it's the man with the problem while the woman stands by helplessly. Well, not any more! Not only does she instigate Mark's cure, she finds a way to appropriate his condition.Thor and his friend Drake are orderlies ? more ?dis'orderlies, who keep the place moving, try to keep Renee under control, and have fun with Mark's imaginary friends. But maybe they're not orderlies at all. Maybe, they're just patients that think they have a job. Maybe they don't exist at all!Enter on the scene Mom and Dad, admitted meddlers on a mission to ruin the lives of whatever children they can find. Whose parents are they? Thor's for starters. Maybe Mark's, maybe Renee's. Mom and Dad instigate some unexpected and heartbreaking twists and turns that upend even the sparse figments of reality we've all come to believe. Seeking Asylum is a fast paced romp between imagination and reality, between laughter and tears, and in its own way, tells a moving story on the values of love, friendship, truth, and honesty. By the end, the line in and out of reality draws very thin, providing for a fun and memorable evening at the asylum ? er, theater. Just wait for the duck whistle.Cast:4 Males, 6 Females, 1 eitherRabushka, Jerry is the author of 'Seeking Asylum : Full-Length Comedy Play', published 2003 under ISBN 9781932404111 and ISBN 1932404112.
