SUMMARY

ORGANIZATION OF THE BOOK The protection of people, physical assets, and information is a concern at every level of society. Whether an individual, a giant organization, or a nation, one's need for safety and security is fundamental. However, due to limited resources or lack of authority to confront numerous noncriminal risks, public law enforcement agencies are unable to provide adequate protection against the multitude of threats. In addition to crime, numerous hazards threaten personal safety and property. Natural disasters and environmental mishaps can be costly. Technological advances create opportunities for invasions of privacy and nonphysical intrusion into organizational databases. Terrorism has also emerged as a major threat to public safety and security. Consequently, security services have experienced tremendous growth, both in terms of the number of personnel employed and the financial investment in loss prevention and asset protection. Security Management. An Introduction,2nd edition, provides up-to-date information and expands on material presented in the first edition while it addresses security operations and management in the post-9/11 era. It utilizes a unique approach as it presents management strategies for loss prevention as well as an overview of the security field. The book is comprehensive and it highlights the multitude of security-related subjects while avoiding unnecessary discussion. It balances the business and legal orientations of security management and addresses security from public as well as private perspectives. The book also identifies over 20 security environments, applications, and services and examines issues encountered within these areas. The book incorporates the findings of the ASIS International/Webster University Education Symposium as well as the proceedings of the ASIS Academic/Practitioner Symposia. Although the ASIS symposia products continue to be works in progress, this book addresses and makes reference to the topics outlined in the ASIS recommendations for introduction to security courses for business students. This book may be used as a text in security management, criminal justice, or business courses, or as a reference for security managers. Practitioners working within specific security venues can use the book to familiarize themselves with other applications in the security industry. Those pursuing an ASIS International Certified Protection Professional (CPP) designation will discover that this book is a must read when preparing for the CPP examination. A recent CPP recipient stated that the book presents a systematic approach to the broad array of data contained within the scope of security management. The CPP declared that the book "contains a significant amount of information tested on the CPP examination" and it serves as a "guide" and "confidence builder" for the exam. Reviewers refer to the book as excellent, balanced, well rounded, and efficient in identifying and explaining the significant topics in the security arena. Reviewers also indicate that the book presents valuable information for the front-line manager as well as the student of security management. One reviewer commented that the fundamentals of security management are rarely so well articulated. Chapter 1 presents an introduction to the world of security management. It addresses the nature, scope, and history of security services, the essential elements of security, types of security organizations, regulation and professionalism, the impact of economic and social globalization, homeland security, and the future of security management. Chapter 2 identifies criminal as well as non- criminal threats to individuals and organizations. Chapter 3 confronts the legal issues associated with security management. Chapter 4 defines and outlines the process of risk management, security planning, and program administration. Chapters 5, 6, and 7 address tOrtmeier, P.
