SUMMARY

Renaissance humanism is the subject of this collection of articles by the gifted young historian, John D'Amico, who died suddenly in 1987 at the age of forty. Between them, the studies illustrate how the humanists adapted a common intellectual tradition to varied civic, political and religious circumstances, but the majority deal with Roman humanism during the High Renaissance. The topics covered include religious reform, the varieties of Latin prose used by Roman humanists, and the works of a key figure among them, Paolo Cortesi, and his attack on astrology. The second group of studies turns to German humanism, and especially the editorial efforts of Beatus Rhenanus, the ablest northern European textual critic of his time. The final item, hitherto unpublished, analyses how Ulrich von Hutten, Beatus Rhenanus and others discovered and edited texts on medieval German history which could be used to attack the papacy.L'humanisme de la Renaissance forme le sujet de cette collection de douze articles produits par le talentueux historien John D'Amico, décédé soudainement en 1987, à l''ge de quarante ans.
