The first formal state military flying organization in Rhode Island was formed in 1915 with just two planes. At the onset of World War II, President Roosevelt allocated the 152nd Observation Squadron to Rhode Island’s state militia, now known as the National Guard. The 152nd eventually federalized and joined the 15th Air Force in Europe for combat against the Nazis. Reassigned back to the United States in 1946 as a fighter squadron, the Rhode Island Air National Guard was tasked with the defense of U.S. airspace. Through nearly 200 rare and many previously unpublished images, Rhode Island Air National Guard Aviation documents the guard’s activity from Europe to operations in Afghanistan and Iraq and disaster relief at home.Milligan, Sean Paul is the author of 'Rhode Island Air National Guard Aviation ', published 2007 under ISBN 9780738538174 and ISBN 0738538175.
