Protecting the Great Lakes : The Costs and Benefits of Reducing Toxic Pollution in Three Communities

The Great Lakes contain 95% of the fresh water in the U.S. & 20% of the fresh water in the world. Tens of millions of people in the U.S. & Canada depend on the Great Lakes for drinking water. In 1995 the EPA issued common-sense guidelines to reduce toxic pollution in the Great Lakes & ensure protection for the environment & people living in the area. Will this protection come at a reasonable cost? Results from a detailed evaluation of impacts for 3 communities in the region reveal that public health & environmental benefits will outweigh the costs of achieving those reductions. The 3 communities evaluated for this report were the Fox River near Green Bay, WI; the Saginaw River near Bay City, MI; & the Black River near Cleveland, OH.
