Grace, wife of famed artist Glen Brooks, who has a terminal illness which he hides from her, persuades Glen to instruct Elliot, a young, brilliant, but perhaps unstable student. Eliot, through a subsequent misunderstanding, attempts to denigrate his mentor in the press, seducing Grace into the bargain. Glen dies, and Grace, guilt-ridden, vows to keep his fame alive and help young artists. She befriends David, a Vietnam veteran whose wife, Kuan, suffers from a post-traumatic neurosis over the loss of their child. The neurosis also deprives David of a normal relationship with her. Helplessly, David is drawn into an affair with Greta, a neighbor whose abusive husband deserted her and her two children. Grace, meanwhile, offers David a large apartment for his work, only to discover shortly after that David has taken on responsibilities that may overwhelm him. For now Greta is pregnant and his wife has suddenly recovered. Grace summons David to her Majorca vacation home, and in a bittersweet finale, offers a solution for him.Maxfield, John C. is the author of 'Portraits of Grace' with ISBN 9781413765540 and ISBN 1413765548.
