Born in New Delhi in 1953, Gupta grew up in Montreal before studying photography at the New School in New York under Lisette Model, Philippe Halsman and George Tice. He moved to London to take his MA at the Royal College of Art, before embarking on a career as an artist and curator. Initially choosing documentary reportage photography as a vehicle to engage with social issues, he moved towards a more inventive, fictional style, integrating details of his domestic life and his fight against HIV with a broader political agenda.
