Gaston Louis Alfred Leroux was born May 6, 1868, in Paris. He attended schools in Normandy and studied law in Paris, receiving his degree in 1889. After his father's death the next year, Leroux ate, drank, and gambled his way through his inheritance-a million francsin less than six months. Needing money, he applied for a job as a theater critic, and eventually became a nationally respected journalist. He also began writing detective novels, and had a success with La mystere de la chambre jaune (The Mystery of the Yellow Room, 1907), one of the earliest "locked room" mysteries. He turned to writing full time in 1909, and published the novel that brought him international fame Le fantome de l'Opera in 1910. He went on to publish around two dozen novels in all.
