Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre (1737-1814) was a French writer and botanist. He was born in Le Havre and died in ragny, Val-d'Oise. In 1795 he was elected to the Institut de France the predecessor of the Acadmie Franaise. He is best known for his 1788 novel Paul and Virginia which was written on the eve of the French Revolution.
