Lindo Patterson proposed the method for determining crystal structures which forms the basis of our ability to understand three-dimensional structures in chemistry, biochemistry, geology, and many other branches of science. To mark the fiftieth anniversary of Patterson's discovery, a symposium, "Patterson and Patterson's: Fifty years of the Patterson Function," was held in 1984.
