Ona Dokalskaite, a Lithuanian born painter, studied & lived in the Soviet Union until World War II. Her art derives, as she states in her autobiography, from the Soviet-imposed Socialist Realism in which she was educated & under whose influence she created her first works while living in the Soviet Republic of Byelorussia. As can be seen from the works reproduced in this volume, Dokalskaite's style has remained realistic, emphasizing the narrative. But it has evolved, freeing itself of all traces of impurities of the authoritarian impositions. One discerns in Dokalskaite's later portraits, landscapes, & still life studies a subtlety that transcends the artificiality & distortions of Soviet approved "arts." The viewer stands in awe before an indomitable spirit which remained unbroken in the face of insurmountable odds perpetrated against a whole generation of innocent people.Lapkus, Danas is the author of 'Ona Dokalskaite The Art of Ona Dokalskaite-Paskeviciene' with ISBN 9780961775650 and ISBN 0961775653.
