Robert and Katheryn Hessong have both been public school teachers. Robert eventually became a professor of education at Butler University. Teaching children to read and enjoy history has been Katheryn's passion during her thirty-two-year career, and she has encouraged her students to seek information about their own family histories. The Hessongs enjoy activities with their children and grandchildren, such as cidermaking, pumpkin-harvesting, and rides in Grandpa's cart behind the tractor Carolyn Hessong Hickman earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, in 1957. She has illustrated numerous brochures and the previously published A Home in the Woods. Hickman lives in Maryland and has three children and three grandchildren.
