Very bad things happened at Dragoon Springs. During the summer and autumn of 1858, crews employed by the Butterfield Overland Stagecoach Company worked their way across New Mexico Territory, preparing relay stations for the stagecoaches soon to begin crossing the continent. Twenty-four year old Silas St. John was crew foreman for one the crews. Silas and three members of his crew were attacked by others wielding axes and sledge hammers. Thus began a long and terrifying ordeal in a desolate station located more than 100 miles from help. Cochise arrived with a band of braves; the U.S. Cavalry arrived, and the hideously wounded Silas St. John held on to life tenaciously. Phyillis de la Garza brings the reader into this very frightening and ugly situation, and the reader comes to feel the full horror of the events.de la Garza, Phyllis is the author of 'Nine Days at Dragoon Springs ', published 2006 under ISBN 9781928767435 and ISBN 1928767435.
