Alan Brinkley is the Allan Nevins Professor of History at Columbia University. He has written many books, including Voices of Protest: Huey Long, Father Coughlin, and the Great Depression (Knopf, 1982), which won the 1983 National Book Award. Brinkley is presently writing a biography of Henry Luce for Knopf, and has written extensively for scholarly journals and periodicals. He received a Ph.D. from Harvard University. Ted Widmer is the Director of the C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience at Washington College, and the author of Young America: The Flowering of Democracy in New York City (Oxford University Press, 1999). From 1997 to 2000, he was a speechwriter and senior advisor to President Clinton. Before that, he taught American History and Literature at Harvard University and the Rhode Island School of Design, and has been a frequent contributor to magazines.
