SUMMARY

The last decade has witnessed a significant transformation in the area of particle science and technology, particularly with the emergence of nanoparticulate materials and tailored particles with specific surface functionality. These materials have attracted widespread attention due to their unique and superior properties when compared to conventional particulate systems. Although several techniques have been developed for the synthesis of nanoparticulate systems, the control of surface characteristics of nanoparticulate systems assumes paramount importance because of the high surface-to-volume ratio of the particles. Besides novel synthesis methods, handling of the nanoparticulate systems is also critical for achieving peak performance of these particulate systems. Another related and emerging area is the surface control of larger submicron-/micron-sized particles which currently have extensive applications in the industry. The ability to control surface characteristics of larger particles holds the key to enhanced performance in mechanical, electronic, optical, magnetic, pharmaceutical and biological systems. This volume focuses on a range of topics that include: novel methods for production of controlled size and shape of nanoparticles; the ability to process nanoparticles to form uniform dispersions; directed assembly of nanoparticles at specific locations; large-scale production of nanoparticles; and surface control of nanoparticle materials for tailoring of specific properties. These issues are expected to be quite important to the applications of nanoparticles in the future.Singh, R. K. is the author of 'Nanoparticulate Materials Symposium Held November 26-29, 2001, Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A' with ISBN 9781558996403 and ISBN 1558996400.
