N is for our Nation's Capital: A Washington, DC Alphabet is the fourth collaboration for Marie and Roland Smith. They also authored Z is for Zookeeper: A Zoo Alphabet, B is for Beaver: An Oregon Alphabet and E is for Evergreen: A Washington Alphabet. Roland is the author of many award-winning books for children including Thunder Cave, Sasquatch, Jaguar, Zach's Lie, and The Captain's Dog: My Journey with the Lewis and Clark Tribe. Marie and Roland spend three to four months each year in the D.C. area. The remainder of the year is spent on their small farm south of Portland. Barbara Leonard Gibson received her B.F.A. from Carnegie Mellon University. She has illustrated more than three dozen books including The Nutmeg Adventure; A Picture-Perfect World; Let's Explore a Tropical Forest; Hide and Seek; the National Geographic Society's award-winning pop-up book, Creatures of the Desert World; and the six-book collection, The Little Learner's Library I. She also illustrated Patricia Cornwell's Life's Little Fable and more recently, bestselling children's author Audrey Penn's The Whistling Tree and A Pocket Full of Kisses. An ardent environmentalist, she specializes in horse, wildlife, and nature illustration. When not engrossed in work, she can usually be found either at the small farm where her two horses are boarded, or at a therapeutic riding center where she volunteers her time. She and her composer husband, Robert, live in Olney, Maryland with their dog, Sadie.
