Among the many honors for his books are five nominations for the National Book Award, as well as the Christopher, Jane Addams, Carter G. Woodson, Regina Medal, Jefferson Cup, Washington Book Guild, Olive Branch, and Golden Kite awards. He received the 2001 Laura Ingalls Wilder award, which honored him for his "substantial and lasting contribution" to children's literature.
