Greg Tate has been a staff writer at the Village Voice since 1986. His work has also been published in the New York Times, Rolling Stone, the Washington Post, Premiere, Down Beat, and Art-forum. His writings on visual art have been published by the Whitney Museum, ICA London, ICA Boston, and Gagosian Gallery. A producer and working musician, Tate has, since 1999, put out four albums by his band Burnt Sugar, a fifteen-member conducted-improvisation ensemble modeled after Miles Davis, Sun Ra, and the P-Funk All Stars. Burnt Sugar has performed extensively. A founding member of the Black Rock Coalition, which he helped conceive with Living Colour's Vernon Reid, Tate has produced many programs under the auspices of the Black Rock Coalition Orchestra both in the States and abroadTate, Greg is the author of 'Midnight Lightning Jimi Hendrix and the Black Experience', published 2003 under ISBN 9781556524691 and ISBN 1556524692.
