This book is based on a symposium entitled "Art of the Body," held at UCLA between 28 & 30 January 1983. The symposium was intended to be a global survey of irreversible modifications of the surface & structure of the human body, primarily (if not exclusively) for aesthetic purposes. Contributions encompassed the field of anthropology, sociology, art history, folklore, & medicine. This volume includes 11 of the 12 papers presented at the symposium plus 6 papers that were added later. The symposium had 3 sessions that were organized within a tripartite geographical & historical framework: Europe & Euro-America, Sub-Saharan Africa, & "The Pacific Basin" (Asia, Oceania, & Native America).
