Born in Spanish Harlem in 1932, Max Salazar became fascinated with Afro-Cuban music as a child, but it wasn't until 1968, while taking an English literature course at the City University of New York, that he began to write about the music. From 1973 to 1976, his articles on Latin music history appeared monthly in Latin New York magazine; in 1990 he began writing for Latin Beat, where he is now senior editor. He has also contributed to Melody Maker, Clave, Mira, Latin Times, Impacto, Musician, and the Village Voice. From 1974 until 1989, he hosted The Latin Musicians Show on New York radio station WKCR.
