Born in 1832, Louisa May Alcott was the second of four daughters. She grew up in a close family that struggled financially. To help out, she worked as a school-teacher, a servant, and a seamstress. Despite having numerous jobs, Alcott still found time to explore her creativity. Stories she wrote when she was sixteen became her first book, Flower Fables, which was published in 1854. She later served as a nurse during the Civil War and her letters from this time of her life became the book Hospital Sketches. Her biggest success, however, came from the novel Little Women, which was inspired by her life and her siblings. Throughout her life, she worked for numerous causes, such as ending slavery and gaining women the right to vote.
