SUMMARY

Jeffrey Brooks (Ph.D., Stanford University) is a professor of history at Johns Hopkins University. A cultural historian who specializes in modern Russia, he is the author of two books: Thank You, Comrade Stalin! Soviet Public Culture from Revolution to Cold War (2000) and When Russia Learned to Read: Literacy and Popular Literature, 1861-1917 (1985), which won the Vucinich Prize of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies for best book by an American. Professor Brooks is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and recently returned from a semester teaching in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He received the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award in Arts and Sciences for 2004. Georgiy Chernyavskiy (Ph.D., Kharkov University, Ukraine) is professor emeritus of history at the Ukrainian Academy of Culture in Kharkov and is now an independent researcher living in Baltimore. The author of many books on Bulgarian and Russian history, his most recent, both published in Russian, are Sagas of the Truth and Lies: Political Dramas of the Twentieth Century (2004) and The Shadow of the Devil's Wing: Bolshevism and National Socialism - A Comparative Historical Analysis (2003). Together with his colleagues, Professor Chernyavskiy received the Lomonosov Prize for the textbook Historiography of the History of Southern and Western Slavs (1967).Brooks, Jeffrey is the author of 'Lenin And the Making of the Soviet State A Brief History With Documents', published 2007 under ISBN 9781403971586 and ISBN 1403971587.
