This volume contains a collection of book catalogues of commercial lending libraries from Hessen-Kassel up to the year 1866 as sources of information on popular reading culture and education history. As such it supplements the study on »The Significance of the Lending Library for Reading Culture in Hessen-Kassel 1753-1866« (STSL 42) published in the same series in 1994. For the first time in German library historiography, it discusses this most influential type of library in the 18th and 19th centuries in a broader regional context.
