SUMMARY

Chapter One: About the New SAT You may have heard that the SAT is undergoing a makeover. Students in the class entering college in 2005 will take the "old" SAT, and students in the class of 2007 will take the "new" test. If you're in the entering class of 2006, you'll have to check with the colleges you're considering. Chances are, you'll be able to take either test -- or both -- and choose your best score. That policy is up to each school, however, so you'll have to check with your schools of interest before you do anything. Kaplan recommends that students in the class of 2006 take both tests. This book is designed for the new test, with everything you need to ace all the new sections. If you're taking the SAT for the first time, how the test has changed really shouldn't concern you. But we'll show you the breakdown anyway, in case you're curious. Old Test, New TestThere are a few significant changes on the new SAT. First, the former Verbal Section has been renamed Critical Reading. The Analogies questions (NEWBORN is to YOUNG as MADONNA is to ----) have been eliminated and replaced with Short Reading Passages. Second, a new component called SAT Writing has been added. It contains multiple-choice grammar questions and a 25-minute written essay. Third, the Math Section has been expanded to include three years of high school math. In other words, it will include harder questions in the area of algebra II. Quantitative comparisons, those nasty column A/column B questions, are gone. Each section is scored on a 200-800 point scale. The three scores are then added together to get your cumulative score. Whereas on the old SAT, you could get a perfect score of 1600, you can now get a 2400. This book is designed for the 2400 test taker. Format and Time Since the test is new, changes can occur right up till Test Day. But here's what the College Board has announced: The SAT topic areas are divided into eight sections. (Actually, there will be nine sections on the test, but one of them is a 25-minute experimental section that won't count. You won't know which section that is, however, so you'll have to work through all sections alike.) Here's how they break down. The Math Section (70 Minutes)There are two kinds of questions on the Math section: Regular Math questions, which are straightforward multiple-choice questions; and Grid-Ins, which require you to write your response in a little grid. Both types of question test the same math concepts -- they're just in different formats. There are two 25-minute sections and one 20-minute section. The Critical Reading Section (70 Minutes)The Critical Reading section contains three types of questions. Sentence Completions test your ability to see how the parts of a sentence relate to each other. They are basic fill-in-the-blank questions -- with either one blank or two. Short Reading Comprehension questions test your ability to understand a very brief passage, and Long Reading Comprehension questions test your know-how with a longer text. For the reading comprehension questions, you are asked about such things as the main idea, contextual references, and vocabulary. There are two 25-minute sections and one 20-minute section. The Writing Section (60 Minutes)The new Writing section is broken into two parts: a written essay (that you write), and multiple-choice questions in Usage, Sentence Correction, and Paragraph Correction. Both sections are meant to test your grasp of grammar, usage, and vocabulary. The essay assignment will come first. In fact, it will likely be the very first section on the test. You'll have 25 minutes to write the essay, and if you finish early, you'll be allowed to move on directly to the multiple-choice questions. (But once the 25 minutes are up for the essay, you won't be allowed to go back to itKaplan Publishing Staff is the author of 'Kaplan New Sat 2400 2005 Edition', published 2004 under ISBN 9780743260350 and ISBN 074326035X.
