John Grierson (1898-1972) was a Scotsman who created the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). First to use the word documentary in relation to film, he founded the documentary film movement in Britain. Prime Minister Mackenzie King invited Grierson to Canada and in 1939 appointed him first commissioner of the NFB.During the Second World War, Grierson supervised the distribution of wartime information. After the war, he was accused of being a communist and was brought before a secret tribunal. He left Canada, but returned many years later to teach at McGill University.Although Grierson worked in Canada only a short time, he left a profound legacy. In this fast-paced and entertaining short biography, Gary Evans demystifies John Grierson as he explores the question, Who was that man? A secret agent? Canada’s Propaganda Maestro? A victim of the Cold War? A civil servant? Or the King of the Showmen?Evans, Gary is the author of 'John Grierson Trailblazer Of Documentary Film', published 2005 under ISBN 9781894852159 and ISBN 189485215X.
