John Grierson (1898-1972) was a Scotsman who created the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). First to use the word documentary in relation to film, he founded the documentary film movement in Britain. Prime Minister Mackenzie King invited Grierson to Canada and in 1939 appointed him first commissioner of the NFB.During the Second World War, Grierson supervised the distribution of wartime information.
