Iranische Personennamenbuch : Rückschau, Vorschau, Rundschau

There are essentially two parts to this volume: (1) an introductory survey of the "Dictionary of Iranian Personal Names" (Iranisches Personennamenbuch, IPNB; pp. 732), begun by Manfred Mayrhofer in 1969 and published by the Austrian Academy of Sciences and (2), a bibliography of Iranian anthroponomastic studies (pp. 3756). In the first section the author presents the IPNB's conception, traces its development until now and outlines the present stage of the project. Based on the experience gained thus far, he also looks at general entry questions, both in regard to personal names attested in Iranian languages and those from the many Iranian language branches. The short bibliography in the second section is without antecedent. First it lists general studies on Iranian anthroponomastics as well as studies dealing with more than one language, before listing studies on personal names in individual (Old, Middle, and New) Iranian languages and in various Iranian language branches. In this, it more or less follows the overall structure of the IPNB (pp. 3335). Studies on (the interpretation of) individual names have not been taken into account; attention has rather been given to publications of a more general kind, especially to those devoted to the names attested in a particular body of texts or to names of a special type of formation.
