International and Internationalized Criminal Courts The New Face of International Peace and Security?

International criminal courts are taking a more important place within the international legal system and becoming more influential in the development of international criminal law. In this booklet, based on an inaugural speech of 13 November 2003, Geert-Jan Knoops analyses the role and position of international and so-called internationalized (mixed) criminal courts within the existing international criminal law. The author not only analyses these developments but also questions whether the increasing influence of the international criminal tribunals is favourable, especially when compared to the role of the national criminal systems.
