In the Dark

During the Second World War, the great art treasures of the National Gallery were secretly transported for safekeeping to disused caves in the North Wales quarry region. A gang of local children chance upon the transporting trucks and the treasures as they arrive and are intrigued, not understanding, naturally, what is afoot. Through this strand of the novel, the relationships between the children are explored and a wartime childhood is evoked.
