This is the definitive publication of the ten-year Southern Hebrides Mesolithic Project (1988-1998). The project aimed to document Mesolithic settlement on the islands of Islay and Colonsay and interpret it to throw light on a number of major issues; the colonization of Scotland following the last Ice Age; the nature of early postglacial settlement patterns; and the transition to Neolithic and farming economies. A core element is the publication of the major Mesolithic settlements of Bolsay Farm on Islay and Staosnaig on Colonsay. The key feature of the project, however, is the application of a landscape approach to hunter-gatherer archaeology through multi-disciplinary research.Steven Mithen is the author of 'Hunter-Gatherer Landscape Archaeology: The Southern Hebrides Mesolithic Project 1988-98 (Monograph Series)', published 2000 under ISBN 9781902937120 and ISBN 1902937120.
