Howard M. Halpern received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Columbia University in 1954 and has been on the staff of several hospitals and clinics, as well as on the faculties of Columbia University, Finch College, and the Metropolitan Institute for Psychoanalytic Studies. From 1962 to 1977, he was the codirector of the New York Student Consultation Center for Psychotherapy. He is a former president of the American Academy of Psychotherapists, was a consulting editor of Voices: The Art and Science of Psychotherapy, and has published many writings in the field, including numerous articles and his previous book Cutting Loose: An Adult Guide to Coming to Terms With Your Parents (Bantam Books). His latest book is Finally Getting it Right. He also wrote a nationally syndicated column called "On Your Own." For forty-eight years, Dr. Halpern has practiced psychotherapy in New York City.
