Earl Der [Derr] Biggers (1884¿1933), was born in Warren, Ohio and graduated from Harvard in the class of 1907. A successful Broadway playwright, Biggers happened to read, while on vacation in Hawaii in 1919, a newspaper article about a local Chinese detective, Chang Apana. Fascinated by the dramatic possibilities, Biggers created Charlie Chan, one of the greatest fictional detectives of all time and an American cultural icon of the twentieth century.
