In the summer of 1992, a friend of DENVER CATHOLIC REGISTER Editor Charlene Scott found a book on the Holy Shroud of Turin at a garage sale in Denver. The book brought back memories to Scott, who first saw a picture of the suffering face of the shroud at a great aunt's house when Scott was only six years old. The book contained full information regarding Dr. John P. Jackson, a physics professor at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, director of the team of scientists who performed tests on the shroud in Turin, Italy, in 1978. Scott was excited by the prospect that Dr. Jackson might still be living in the area & working on the shroud, despite the fact that radio carbon dating had disappointed her & millions of others when three laboratories announced in 1988 that the shroud dated only to the fourteenth century. Several calls to the Air Force Academy finally were fruitful. Dr. Jackson not only was still involved with shroud research, he was opening a shroud center & exhibit in Colorado Springs. Scott interviewed Dr. Jackson & his Jewish wife, Rebecca, who had converted to Christianity & contributed much to an understanding of the Jewishness of the Man of the Shroud. A six-part series on the shroud written by Scott appeared in the REGISTER during Lent 1993. Rebecca's theory that the shroud might have first been used as the tablecloth at the Last Supper astounded Christians all the way from Britain to Australia to Russia. The series won a national award from the Catholic Press Association in May 1994, & Scott joined the Turin Shroud Center as Communications Director in November, 1994. She is a former religion editor of the HOUSTON POST & a former bureau chief of the MIAMI HERALD. To order contact: St. Mark's Avenue Press, Colorado Springs, CO 80918.
