SUMMARY

This series of five monologues all center around people grappling with the significance of the cross and Christ's sacrifice. At Willow Creek we used a very large cross which appeared to have crashed through the roof of the church and into the lives of these people. Monologue #1: A woman is perplexed because she understands the fact of Jesus death on a cross-she can even picture the nails through his hands and the sweat on his forehead-but she struggles with appropriating his sacrifice for her, personally. She says, "God so loved the world," but questions if that means her. Monologue #2: A woman is confronted by her husband's sudden request for a divorce and is in great pain. She stumbles into church and feels angry, where is God when life really stinks? Then the words of a song strike her, "Jesus loves the brokenhearted because his heart was broken too." Jesus understands and cares, she experiences the depth of his love at a time when she needs it the most. Monologue #3: A woman recounts when her college roommate entered their room in tears. The roommate tells her she was just in a Bible study and it hit her that she didn't know where her friend was going when she died. The woman is very touched by her roommate's genuine concern and sincerity. She asks, "What makes someone care that much?" Monologue #4: A chance encounter with a woman at K-Mart causes another woman, a Christian, to sense she should start a conversation with her. Through the course of the conversation she finds out the woman is not doing well. She is trying to find a place to live so she can get her baby back. The woman pours out her heart, even showing pictures of her baby. Moved by the story, the Christian reaches out offering help and hope. Monologue #5: At a time when his life feels out of control, a man sits in quiet on a pier at a lake. He pours out his thoughts and frustrations to God. He is hurt and struggling and even blames God. When he is done, he stands in silence and is suddenly overwhelmed with a feeling of peace. He senses God knows his struggles and imagines God challenging him with the simple question, "Am I enough?"Willow Creek Association is the author of 'Good Friday Medley', published 2002 under ISBN 9780744143874 and ISBN 074414387X.
