The issue of women's rights re-emerged with renewed vigour in the 1950s and 1960s, expressed in the liberal concept of equality of opportunity. Over the last twenty years attempts have been made to create conditions within education systems that would remove the formal barriers to sex equality and would give individuals equal access to education, training and jobs. This book is one of the first to examine the issue from a comparative European perspective and looks at the development of equal educational opportunities for girls since the 1970s and the impact of international policy on national legislation and educational practice from nursery to higher education. A wealth of statistics are provided which show the changes in girls' educational achievements throughout this period. The education systems of nine European countries are studied, concentrating on the changing patterns and trends of girls' achievements in education and discussing the obstacles which still lie in the path of girls and young women at school and in the labour market. The concluding chapters draw together the similarities and differences between the countries covered and suggest future policy directions at school and national levels.Wilson, Maggie is the author of 'Girls and Young Women in Education: A European Perspective, Vol. 1' with ISBN 9780080372679 and ISBN 0080372678.
