Ghetto Sketches

A native of the ghettos of Chicago and an original member of the Watts Writers Workshop, Hawkins has more than a dozen screenplays to his credit, and 50-plus radio scripts including many presented on the Sears Radio/Mutual Radio Theatre in addition to hundred of articles, short stories and his novels. He has logged countless hours as a motivational speaker and writing instructor, leading workshops in the Artreach Program at Chino and San Quentin Prisons, Developmental Vocational Institution, and the Poets in the School Program, to mention only a few. For the past two dozen years, Hawkins has instructed students of Capoeira Angola, an Aftrican-Brazilian form of martial arts/dance.
