This edition includes an account of its writing, critical reception in Australia and the English-speaking world at large, the story of its textual evolution, a fragmentary memoir of Richardson written by her close friend Mary Kernot, verses by Richardson about her schooldays, and contemporary material from her school magazine. Also includes textual notes, explanatory notes and maps. Published simultaneously in hardcover and paperback. Born Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson (1870-1945), author took the name Henry Handel Richardson when her first novel, 'Maurice Guest', was published in 1908. Probyn is a Professor of English at Monash University, Melbourne.
