Getting of Wisdom

Critical edition of a classic Australian novel, first published 1910. It was the author's favourite of her novels and was based on her coming of age in Colonial Melbourne in the 1880s. This edition includes an account of its writing, critical reception in Australia and the English-speaking world at large, the story of its textual evolution, a fragmentary memoir of Richardson written by her close friend Mary Kernot, verses by Richardson about her schooldays, and contemporary material from her school magazine. Born Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson (1870-1945), author took the name Henry Handel Richardson when her first novel, 'Maurice Guest', was published in 1908.
