"This is the first architectural history of the Georgian squares of Dublin and examines each one in turn. The design and development of each square is explored, along with house types and building materials; external features, including railings, balconies, foot-scrapers, doors and windows with special reference to the celebrated fanlights; internal arrangement and decoration of houses, including joinery, plasterwork and more rarely wallpaper, painted frescoes and stained glass; and even mundane comforts underpinning the entirety, for instance fireplaces for heat and wells for water. Special elements, including gardens, mews and lanes to the rear, are also looked at, as are the magnificent parks at the centre of each square. Social history is reviewed, including the demography of inhabitants at various times, the ways they used the houses and the impact this had on their structure, not always to the benefit of the squares. Finally, the present position of Dublin's Georgian Squares is placed in the context of the modern city and recommendations for conservation and preservation are advanced to ensure their survival and progression into the 21st century."--BOOK JACKET.Dublin City Council is the author of 'Georgian Squares of Dublin An Architectural History', published 2007 under ISBN 9780946841783 and ISBN 0946841780.
