In 1986 the PBS television program Smithsonian World broadcast a documentary, "On the Shoulders of Giants," focusing on David W. Steadman's work in the Galapagos in Darwin's footsteps. Steve Zousmer wrote the script for the documentary & later collaborated on another Galapagos film. The focus of this book is Steadman's experience & scientific research in the Galapagos. Part I offers a personal account of fieldwork during 8 trips to the islands. His brother Lee accompanied him on 2 of these trips, & his paintings illustrate the species descriptions that make up the second part of the book.
