Dr. Dyson received his baccalaureate degree from Columbia College, Columbia University, his Juris Doctor degree from Columbia University School of Law in the City of New York and his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Keele University in Staffordshire, United Kingdom. Following graduation from Columbia Law School as a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, Dr. Dyson practiced law with the firm of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in New York City where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions as well as leverage buyouts. There he represented AOL in its publicly announced merger with Time Warner in the largest merger in U.S. history valued at approximately US $166 billion. He also represented major telecommunications companies in publicly announced acquisitions of leading wireless communications providers in South America. Dr. Dyson also participated in the landmark school finance lawsuit, Campaign For Fiscal Equity v. State of New York. Subsequently, he became primarily responsible for federal civil rights enforcement as an attorney for the special projects team of the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights (OCR). There he received distinction for his case work analysis in inter-district school funding discrimination. Dr. Dyson has also advised the Texas State Legislature Joint Select Committee on Public School Finance in its mission to revise the state funding formula for public education. He also served as the educational program coordinator for the Merrill Lynch Philanthropic Foundation and the ScholarshipBuilder program; an award winning program honored by the White House for its distinguished service to the nation. A former law clerk to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Dr. Dyson joined SMU from the faculty of Columbia University where he taught education law and was awarded the Mentoring Scholars Fellowship to conduct public policy research. He has written and lectured extensively in the areas of educational testing and school funding, judicial remedies, game theory, critical race theory and corporate law. Dr. Dyson also served as a legal analyst to the Dallas Morning News, Education Week and Channel 11 News. In addition, he is the recipient of numerous awards including the prestigious King's Crown Award (2 yrs consec.), the Kluge Award, the Taft-Carpenter Teaching Award and the Albert Roothbert Teaching Award. Dr. Dyson is a member of the United States Supreme Court, the Chair-Elect of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) Section on Education Law, an Executive Member of the AALS Minority Groups Section and is a member of the National and American Bar Associations.
