In 1998, the eighth assembly of the World Council of Churches made a special pledge to accompany Africa on a 'Journey of Hope'. The overall aim of the ecumenical focus on Africa is to provide a space in which the churches, together with the national councils of churches, sub-regional fellowships and the All Africa Conference of Churches may become fully involved in Africa's re-awakening.
