Electromagnetic Symmetry

Electromagnetic theory is a classical subject firmly based on the Maxwell equations which, together with the constitutive parameters, in principle lead to a quantitative description of an electromagnetic problem radiation, scattering and the like. The quantitative description entails the construction of an analytical or numerical solution given the geometry which, for typical diffraction problems, is not an easy task.; An equally important question, however, is the reverse problem, which is: what should the geometry for example, boundary conditions be to achieve some desired performance such as antenna pattern, scattering behaviour or bandwith. In some cases the reverse problem has no solution at all.
