On Saturday, May 12, 1962, Marcus Hooks left Donna, Texas, flying a load of contraband cashmere to a customer in Mexico. Forced, by water in his fuel, to make an emergency landing, he burned his plane in hopes of destroying the evidence, knowing the Mexican customs authorities would confiscate the plane & the cargo. While responding to a report that he was missing, a search plane from Harlingen Air Force Base crashed into a mountain top in Mexico killing all nine airmen aboard. Marcus was arrested, escaped the next day, & remained at large in the wilds for ten days while attempting to find his way out of that remote area. After losing over 60 pounds attempting to return to Texas, he was recaptured, brought before a Tampico judge, & imprisoned. To avoid self-incrimination, few smugglers ever document their activities. The statute of limitations, however, has since relieved Marcus of any jeopardy, so his story can now be told as it actually happened. The book's credibility is supported by numerous articles from U.S. & Mexican newspapers.Malmin, Jack is the author of 'El Otro Lado the Other Side The True Story of Marcus Hooks Smuggler' with ISBN 9780962719806 and ISBN 0962719803.
